In 1959 the State of Nevada accepted Willy Shettler and Rusty Crook’s recommendation for the alternate site of the 1960 Olympic Downhill to be held on our East Bowl. Willy and Rusty, in the summer of 1958, laid out an official F.I.S. Downhill from the top of our mountain down the Silver Dollar run. The run went past the Warming Hut on the west, then into what we called “The Hole”. The state put up a building next to the Warming Hut to help with the Olympic Effort, as Squaw had not quite enough snow. We were prepared to have the race at Mt. Rose in the case that Squaw did not receive sufficient snow. Luck shined on Squaw that year as snow began to fall the day before the opening ceremony.
