Play. Protect. PRESERVE.

A Growing Commitment

Mt. Rose embraces sustainability that protects the environment, improves company performance, and is good for our employees, guests, and community.

Current
efforts

Mt. Rose’s sustainability initiatives span across our operations. Current efforts include, but are not limited to:

  • We partner with the Tahoe Fund to offer a $1-for-Tahoe donation option on our digital ticket sales. All proceeds go to the Tahoe Fund for environmental health and improvement projects.
  • We endorse the National Ski Area Association’s (NSAA) Sustainable Slopes program and have earned the NSAA’s Supply Chain, Education & Outreach, and Waste Reduction sustainability certifications.
  • Our mountain-wide sustainable purchasing policy focuses on supporting local and environmentally conscious vendors and using recycled and renewable materials wherever possible.
  • We track our GHG emissions and are exploring emissions reduction projects.
  • Office operations are certified as a Nevada Green Business.
  • Our employee carpool and vanpool programs aim to reduce single-vehicle trips to the mountain by offering incentives for ridesharing to work.
  • Our on-hill Mountain Naturalist tours offer guests the opportunity to learn about our forest, watershed, and mountain history. Check the calendar to join us on these free tours!

Stewardship

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe has a long history of providing an outdoor recreation experience while preserving the natural beauty surrounding us here. This includes the natural resource protection effects (best management efforts) to conserve and protect the natural resources on Slide Mountain. These efforts will ensure the continued enjoyment of this special place for generations to come.

Current practices to conserve the area’s natural resources include the protection of sensitive species and habitats, erosion control measures, water quality improvement, and native vegetation restoration.

Initiatives

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

  • Utilize building light timers and occupancy sensors to reduce electricity use.
  • We have upgraded most of our lodge lighting to LED lightbulbs.
  • We will align new projects with NSAA Sustainable Slopes best practices, especially regarding materials sourcing and energy efficiency.

FOREST MANAGEMENT

  • 1:1 replant policy: We commit to planting a new tree for every tree that is removed for an on-mountain project. Tree species and location will be considered to ensure that new growth will benefit the long-term health of this forest.
  • We have planted over 170 blister rust-resistant trees from the Sugar Pine Foundation in areas on the mountain impacted by this disease.
  • This summer, we piloted an ‘enhanced rock weathering’ on the mountain and will measure its benefit for soil health and carbon sequestration over time.

WASTE REDUCTION

  • Our accelerated food composter diverts food waste from landfills and provides beneficial soil amendment.
  • Recycle batteries, light bulbs, and scrap metal produced onsite.
  • Encourage the use of water bottle filling stations to help eliminate single-use plastic throughout the resort.
  • Using reusable dishware during most operations.
  • Use trash bags made with recycled plastic to minimize the new resources sent to landfill.
  • We have recycled over 500 sheave liners (5,000 lbs+ of rubber/tire type waste)

GREENHOUSE GASES

  • Our sustainable purchasing policy emphasizes using locally sourced products where applicable to reduce shipping and transportation emissions.
  • We are tracking our Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions to inform projects that will reduce our fossil fuel use and overall GHG emissions.

Community

  • Our weekly nature tours feature experts from our Mt. Rose Green Team and from the Reno/Tahoe community.
  • We partner with the Tahoe Fund to offer a $1-for-Tahoe donation option on our digital ticket sales. All proceeds go to the Tahoe Fund for environmental health and improvement projects.
  • We choose local suppliers whenever possible. We proudly partner with Drink Coffee Do Stuff, Tahoe Truckee Jerky, El Rosal Tortillas, Great Basin Brewing, Revision Brewing, and many more.
  • Our staff has formed a Blue Crew with Keep Tahoe Blue and we’ve cleaned 250+ lbs. of trash out of the Tahoe Meadows. We also supported trail maintenance efforts for the Tahoe Meadows boardwalk project this past summer.
  • Member of the Nevada Outdoor Business Coalition
  • We are a proud Nevada Green Business, as our office operations meet the environmental standards for this certification.
  • Environmental awareness and stewardship have long been part of our on-mountain culture; now, we formally include them in seasonal onboarding.
