FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Uniforms

An official Mt. Rose Ski Team jacket is required for all Ski Team athletes (except Masters).

All non-competitive All Mountain Programs (Rippers, Shredders and Freeride (DEV)) will continue to use the orange AKOVA jackets as the official Ski Team uniform. The hardshell is mandatory, while the insulator is optional and can be in the color of your choice.

AKOVA will handle all jacket needs and inquiries for Rippers, Shredders and Freeride DEV athletes/families.

  • AKOVA provides many size options, including youth and adult sizes (please refer to the size chart below for more information)
  • Jackets purchased from AKOVA will be shipped directly to the purchaser. Shipping timelines may vary.

SIZE GUIDES – AKOVA has size guides + size calculators for each jacket type:  Kids – Adult Female – Adult Male

Athletes in the Race Programs and the Freeride Competitive Program can continue to use their existing AKOVA orange jackets. However, all new jacket purchases for athletes in these programs should be of the new Helly Hansen tangerine orange Eagle three-layer shell jacket that is now the standard jacket for these programs.

Helly Hansen Jackets will be available for pre-order starting in May.  Details will be posted here.

There will be several size options available, including youth and adult sizes (please refer to the size chart below for more information).   However, there will be finite availability in each size, so you are encouraged to place your order early.

Old Ski Team Jackets: The previous generation Ski Team Black/Green Descente jackets will no longer be eligible for use by ski team athletes.

Pants: Black (recommended but not required) pants can be the color of your choosing).

Can I return my AKOVA/Helly Hansen jacket if the one we ordered is too small or too large?

Unfortunately, jackets purchased new from AKOVA/Helly Hansen cannot be returned as they are manufactured specifically to order for Mt. Rose athletes, with custom embroidery and logos added.

Will AKOVA exchange our purchased jacket if my athlete needs a different size during the season?

Mt. Rose AKOVA hardshell Jackets may be exchanged for a different size during the season. Note: Jacket shipping and arrival times may vary.

Is there any place my athlete can try different sizes on?

We advise using the vendor’s size chart to determine an appropriate size.  Generally, fast-growing children should size up at least one size. Note that AKOVA jackets have an ‘adjust-a-fit’ sleeve system, allowing for 2 inches of sleeve adjustment.

Before every season, Mt. Rose and the Mt. Rose Snowsports Education Foundation (MRSEF) hosts a gear swap and BBQ event in late August, where sample jackets may be tried on for size. Invitations for all registered athletes are sent for this event about a month prior to the date of the event.

Yes! A shared document has been made available to facilitate transactions between families.

Yes, athletes may wear their Mt. Rose Ski Team jackets when not training.

We ask that all athletes skiing in their Mt. Rose Ski Team jackets follow all ski team safety rules, including skiing safely and always obeying the Responsibility Code, skiing in control at all times, and following all chairlift safety guidelines, including riding all chairlifts with the bar down.

Notifications

We will activate an alert before a training or race event to indicate whether the event is a go or no-go. If it is for a weekend event, the alert will be added on Friday and Saturday afternoons, the day before scheduled training and/or events. Please note the different alerts below:

Program is a GO!

Programs will operate as normal.

CAUTION – POSSIBLE IMPACTS

A caution alert will notify athletes of a potential postponement, location changes, weather, or other changes in everyday operations.

NO GO – PROGRAMS WILL NOT RUN

All Ski Team programs have been canceled for this day due to weather concerns/operational impacts.

All Mountain program Teams – MAIN LODGE AREA

Ski Team Meeting

All Mountain Program Teams start on the snow, out from the main lodge, near Northwest Express Load at the main lodge. Look for the large flags denoting Program Teams.

Race Program Teams – WINTERS CREEK LODGE

Race Program Teams start on the snow near Zephyr Express at Winters Creek Lodge.

We use the email address(es) provided during athlete ski team registration, and typically, families forward/share any communications within their family.

On request,  we may be able to manually add e-mail addresses for program-specific communications.    General Mountain communications will only go to the registered email address.

If you are not receiving Ski Team program e-mails, there are many possible reasons for this, and we cannot troubleshoot individual e-mail account issues.

Please Note: Due to SafeSport requirements, ski team program emails will not be sent directly to athletes.

We are normally unable to accommodate special requests/exceptions for registration in our Ski Team programs.  Registration is first-come, first-served, and we are not able to make additions to registration once a program is sold out and at maximum capacity.

Changes to athlete registration before the season has begun are only possible when there is enrollment capacity in the desired program(s) – i.e. Shredders Saturday.  Our programs typically sell out well before the beginning of the ski season. The best we can do is add you to a wait-list for the desired program/session.  We will notify you if a spot becomes available. The wait-list closes once the season has begun.

Any change to athlete registration will result in a $100 processing fee, per registration/athlete.

Changes to the program an athlete is registered for after the season has begun are only made if the athlete is not a good ability level fit for their program, as determined by Ski Team coaches.  We do not ‘move’ athletes between programs by request, once registered.

Athletes are evaluated for skiing ability the first several weekends of training and are placed with similar ability-level skiers in a group with a coach.  If it is determined an athlete is not a good fit for the program they are registered for, we will explore alternatives, including moving programs – but this is not guaranteed.  Programs may be sold out/at maximum capacity, and moving to a different program may not be an option. In those cases, a full refund less a $100 processing fee, per registration/athlete, will be processed.

Note, that moving between programs could result in an additional expense OR a refund for a portion of enrollment fees.

Moving between training days is only an option if we have availability on the desired day, and will result in a $100 processing fee, per registration/athlete.

PLEASE NOTE: Any change to athlete registration (program/day) will result in a $100 processing fee, per registration/athlete.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience the lunch schedule creates – staggering lunches is the only way we can avoid long lines, excessive wait times, and overcrowding in the lodge and cafe.

While we would like to accommodate Program/Team swaps or other adjustments to accommodate personal preferences, such as schedules, changes like these disrupt our coach-to-athlete ratios, which results in an unfair negative impact on other athletes across the Program/Team.

After the season begins/the first few training weeks, there is potential that spots could open up in the Team of your preference – at which point we would need to evaluate athlete fit in the desired Team to ensure they can ski at a level consistent with other athletes in the Team/group.

Hard ear helmets are required for all athletes in our race programs as listed in the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Alpine Competition Regulations.   For U14 and older: athletes must use helmets that meet the FIS standards.  No soft ear helmets allowed

For the Competition Race program:

We recommend athletes should have dedicated slalom and giant slalom skis for this program. We do not recommend season lease skis for athletes in this program as they do not provide the necessary performance to compete successfully.

Athletes will also require slalom protective equipment including  pole guards, shin guards and chin guards.   Race suits are not essential but are recommended for Far West level events.

For athletes progressing to speed events we will endeavor to provide event appropriate skis.

For the Introduction to Ski Racing  program:

Younger athletes (U10) competing in the Tahoe Race Series may use a single event/kombi race ski. Where Athletes in this program progress to slalom training they may require slalom protective equipment including pole guards, shin guards and chin guards.   While younger athletes in this program may possibly be able to use  season lease skis we do recommend a more race oriented ski  which will provide the necessary performance to compete successfully.

PLEASE NOTE:

We strongly recommend that parents should consult with the Race Team Head Coach rtulloch@ski rose.com (207 409 4872)  or the athlete’s coach before purchasing equipment.  We may also have access to suitable used equipment.

There are many variables that go into choosing the right gear, including boots and skis, and most depend on body type/size, the ability/type of skier, and the skier’s preferred style of skiing.

Development Team athletes (Rippers, Shredders and Freeride DEV) should visit a reputable ski shop to discuss new gear and the options that are right for your athlete.

Freeride Competitive Team athletes with gear questions should consult with their program coaches prior to purchasing new boots and/or skis to confirm appropriateness. Freeride Competitive Team athletes should contact Neill Beurskens, [email protected].
